Divorce and relationship loss is one of life’s most difficult times of transition. Often it occurs not as a sudden eruption, but though a long series of poor communication patterns and disappointments.
Transitions out of relationships have certain common characteristics. Uncoupling requires two people to disengage, not only their belongings but their identities. The two partners redefine themselves, both in their own eyes and in the eyes of others.
Another issue that arises out of the separation / break up is the children. What feelings do your children have about the big changes in their lives? How are they handling the transitions? W hat are their symptoms of stress and fear? Do they blame themselves for the separation? How would they act this out if they couldn’t find the words to express their feelings? Are you tuning into their attachment needs?
Taking care of oneself is of utmost importance at this transition time.
